Vortex for Windows

This simulation allows players to learn about PVA- Population Viability Analysis- a method that lets students study the process of extinction without having to travel to the far regions of the world to do so. Simulations have been run on the Florida Panther and Key Deer, Bairds Tapir, Sumatran Tiger, and Puerto Rican parrot. The variables that determine the survival of animals are population, environment, catastrophes, and harvests. Players can manipulate these variables then analyze the results. The results will detail population, extinction, gene transmission and inbreeding effects. Biology teachers could use this simulation to get students involved in learning and caring about animals and the environment.
